Therapeutic Massage

Services

Originally considered a form of luxury spa service and upscale health clubs, massage has taken its leave from the likes of the elite to bring its numerous health benefits to the many. Today, massage therapy is offered in medical practices, hospitals, businesses, and even airports!

Manual mechanical manipulation of a person’s body, via a practitioner’s hands, is loosely referred to as “massage.” Practitioners press, rub, squeeze and apply pressure to the body’s skin, muscles, ligaments and tendons. While there are many individual and unique styles of massage, any form of “therapeutic massage” is practiced by Licensed Massage Therapist, or LMT, who has undergone a rigorous training protocol and holds a license in the state in which they are working. Among the more popular styles of massage are:

Swedish Massage

This more relaxing and moderate-pressured form of massage uses long strokes, deep circular movements, gentle kneading and vibration or tapping motions to help simultaneous relax and energize the body

Deep Tissue Massage

This style of massage utilizes slower, longer strokes with higher intensity and pressure to rehabilitate fatigued or injured muscles deep at their core; the more forceful pressure targets the layers of the muscle closer to the connective tissue, which can help with healing damaged tissues

Sports Massage

Similar to Swedish, this technique may be somewhat faster and is geared towards athletes and more active individuals who may be actively training for athletic events, or recovering from injuries sustained from over-exertion

Trigger-Point Massage

This technique focuses on areas within the body where muscles feel tight and tense, and actively works to release tension felt in the knots that can form in muscle fibers due to injury or overuse

Shiatsu/Table Thai Massage

Performed through clothing, these styles of massage apply pressure to the body via different parts of the practitioner’s bodyweight; a focus on pressure points and energy lines creates an overall effect of energizing and invigorating the body

In a massage, through considerate touch paired with knowledge of the body’s musculature, pain may be alleviated, and tension released. This euphoric feeling, together with the easing of mental strain, induces what is referred to as a “relaxation response.” The relaxation response is a state in which the heart and breathing rate is slowed, blood pressure reduces, the production of stress hormones decreases, and muscles throughout the entire body relax. The relaxation response may also increase the serotonin levels within the body, an important chemical and neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and social behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, and even memory.

Massage is considered an beneficial part of integrative medicine, and is increasingly being offered alongside both standard and complementary treatment protocols for a diverse range of medical conditions.
